John Halvorsen has been a professional musician in the Albany area for close to ten years. As a high school student, his passion for music and enthusiastic demeanor drove him to perform with some of the Capital District's premier youth-based ensembles, such as the Empire State Youth Wind Ensemble and the Empire State Youth Jazz Ensemble. These unique opportunities have enabled John to learn from some of the best jazz musicians from around the world, including Byron Stripling and Mark Vinci. He soon set his sights on teaching to allow others to experience the excitement and passion that music embodies.
John earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of Saint Rose in the field of Music Education. As a graduate student, he taught and conducted several major works for the College of Saint Rose Wind Ensemble, Brass Choir, and Campus Community Band before acquiring a music education position with the Albany City School District. John currently teaches elementary band at Albany School of Humanities and Giffen Memorial Elementary, and works as a co-director with Bryan Cady for the Albany Public Schools Marching Band.
John holds a Permanent New York State Public School Teacher Certificate in Music.
